CANDLEMAS DAY

Candlemas Day is celebrated on February 2. Church Candles for the year are blessed at that time. Blessed Candles for use at home will be available that day and for the rest of the week in the sanctuary of the church.

BLESSING OF THROATS
As the celebration
of the Feast of St. Blaise,
February 3

Wednesday, February 3, is the Feast of St. Blaise. He is remembered for the miraculous cure bestowed on a young man suffering from an ailment of the throat, following his profound prayer to God.

Catholics around the world gather on his feast to receive this blessing and ask that through the intercession of St. Blaise they too will be guarded from similar ailments.

Individual Blessing of Throats will be given on February 3:

  • 7:00 a.m. Communion Service and Blessing
  • 8:30 a.m. Mass and Blessing of Throats
  • 10:45 a.m. Prayer Service and Blessing of Throats

General Blessing will be given at the close of the weekend Masses on February 6/7.

MISSION TRIP
Letters were sent home to parents and teens for those who were not able to attend the January 17th Mission Trip Kick-Off gathering. In addition to general information, the "Community Service Option" sheet was included. Please, oh please, return completed form to the Youth Ministry mailbox no later than this Tuesday, February 2nd. More information below on the February 6th Service Opportunity.

TO LOVE IS TO SERVE
So we are all set with the service endeavor this weekend. All teens are invited to join some of the Mission Trip team next Saturday, February 6th assisting with the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels Mobile Food Pantry. It's pretty simple, yet crazy profound. Come help out many residents of the Humboldt Park neighborhood. Passing out food and clothing will go along way especially during the cold winter and challenging economic times.

Teens will meet at the OLW Parish Center at 8 am and be back before Noon. If you are planning on coming, please contact Kevin in the YM Office so we can make sure we have enough adult drivers. Time to make a beautiful difference!

PEER MINISTRY
The "OLW Catholics Come Home Commercials" from last week keep coming to mind. Loved the excitement and enthusiasm for the Faith. Let's now continue and take it from the Youth Room (actually Neumann Room) and bring it out to our worlds. You all are simply amazing. You are the best commercial the Catholic Church has. PM
Social tonight (Sun) from 7-9 pm.

CORE
So we are switching it up a bit. CORE will attend the 9:45 Mass together (Whoot!!!) next Sunday, February 7th. After Mass we will meet until 1 pm. Let's think about what we want to do for brunch/lunch.

JR. HIGH: ENCHANTED CASTLE
Just a final reminder that the Jr. High Enchanted Castle Outing originally on the schedule for February 5th-6th has been canceled. Kind of sad but no worries, more Jr. High stuff to come.

AN OPEN INVITATION TO THE MEN OF OUR LADY OF THE WAYSIDE

If you have ever had the yearning for some real quiet in your life, this will be of interest to you. Each year, the men of the OLW Jesuit Retreat Group experience their serenity and peace of soul enhanced on a silent weekend retreat at Bellarmine Hall in Barrington, IL.

We are fortunate to have two weekends available for 2010:

Friday evening, February 19 through Sunday noon February 21 with Fr. Peter Fennessy, S.J. as our retreat master and,

Friday evening, April 23 through Sunday noon April 25 with Fr. Ben Hawley, S.J. as our retreat master.

Our February retreat falls during lent this year so we have this special opportunity to prepare for Easter. If you have never made a silent weekend retreat, come and learn how renewing and rewarding this experience can be. The retreat is recommended for men of all ages (including high school and college students) who seek a serious spiritual experience. The program begins with dinner at 7 p.m. Friday evening and concludes after Mass and an optional lunch early Sunday afternoon. Comfortable private rooms and delicious meals are provided for attendees.

As we have had a split reservation for 2010, there is only half the usual number of places in these groups, so please reserve your place early. Make sure to mark your 2010 calendar.

There is a mailing for men who have participated in the silent retreats in the past as well as men active in other parish organizations. In addition to an informational brochure you will find a retreat schedule and a reservation card. If you wish to reserve for either weekend you may fill out the card and mail it directly to Bellarmine Hall, writing in the dates of the weekend that you would like to attend. If you prefer, however, you may call or email John Nelligan, Joe Foreman, or Rich Milburn to either make your reservation or ask any questions that you might have.

If you have not had the experience of a silent retreat, you should give serious consideration to taking the opportunity to attend one of the two weekends being offered. The retreat is a very rewarding experience for all who attend.
