FOOD DRIVE FOR ST. MARK'S PARISH
As we continue our support for the families of St. Mark's, we will sponsor the next food collection on Sunday, February 14th. Items may be dropped off at the OLW garage between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. St. Mark's greatest need continues to be that of nonperishable food items along with baby formula, food and diapers.

Thanks go out to the Rountree Family along with
Margaret Smith and her family for accepting donations last month. The following individuals deserve a
huge thank you for coming forward to help with the delivery process: Joe and Bill Cleary, Bill and Jack Cooney and Brian, Danny and Michael Fitzpatrick. Thank you for all of your time and efforts!

Please contact John Toomey if interested in volunteering to accept donations and if you are available to deliver donations please call Bill Cleary.

Rev. Elmer Romero and the families of St. Mark are truly grateful and would like to extend a sincere and heartfelt
thank you to the parishioners of Our Lady of the Wayside for their continued support!

Sincerely,
The St. Mark's Committee of
the Care & Outreach Commission

Welcome Home table and pick up the pamphlet "How to Forgive the Church."

Prayer to the Holy Family

Jesus, savior and center of our faith,
draw all people to share the life
of your body, the Church.

Mary, mother of the Lord and mother
of the Church, help us to welcome
all those who have been away.

Joseph, guide and guardian of the
Holy Family, inspire us to be
faithful witnesses to our life in Christ.

O Holy Family, pray that we may learn
to welcome, serve and support all who
come to share in our family of faith.

Amen

KAIROS 9
Seems like we've been advertising this forever, and now, it's just about here. Time to truly celebrate! We have 10 most amazing teen retreatants, one incredible teen leader (co-rector, in fact - kind of a big deal) and three wonderful adults representing OLW. All together there are 31 retreatants, 10 teen leaders, and 7 adults involved in this absolutely beautiful weekend. Please keep everyone in your prayers as they dive into Kairos next weekend:

Retreatants: Claire Brady, Sarah Dolan, Brian Hansen, Darrell Jones III, Christine McKee, Kayla Mueller, Emily Schultz, Scott Shewmon, Elizabeth Steelman, and Sarah Symczak. Leaders: (Teen) Katie O'Neill (Adults) Ann Brice, Julia Heyden, and Amanda Wozniak.

MISSION TRIP
Still waiting for some Community Service Opportunity forms to come in. The March 6th and April 11th service options are still available. Please return form straightaway.

This week the Parent Volunteer form will be both emailed and snail mailed home. For obvious reasons, we would appreciate each family to return this sheet at your earliest convenience but definitely by Friday, February 26th. Volunteer positions go beyond just the Pancake Breakfast this year. Something for everyone. Parents, if you do not receive an email by Friday, please contact Kevin in the YM Office so we can correct your contact info. Thank you friends.

Next teen gathering is the joint MT/PM Outreach from 7-9 pm in the Youth Room on Sunday, February 21st. It will be a powerful night!

CAMP WOW HIGH SCHOOL
After two amazing sets of OLW interviews, we are getting to the moment where (hard) decisions need to be made. Hard because the teens who applied are so incredible and our spaces for counselors are limited. In fact we have twice as many spots as ever before, yet a giant amount of teens who have applied and interviewed. The youth ministers will gather this week to discern the team. Announcement will be made at the end of the week. Please keep open the first training, Sunday, February 21st from 2-4 pm at St. Catherine's in Dundee.

PEER MINISTRY
Just a reminder that we decided to forgo PM tonight because of the Super Bowl, hope your team wins. Go Saints? Go Colts? Join PM/MT Outreach is Sunday, Feb. 21st from 7-9 p.m., with a Social on Feb. 28th.

OLW 2010 LENTEN PROGRAM

This year we are inviting the entire parish to concentrate on the gift of the Eucharist as the focus of our lenten devotion, prayer and experience.

During the past several years the United States bishops have become increasingly concerned with what seems to be a lack of understanding of the Eucharist among Catholics, what sets us apart from other Christians. This then leads to a laxity regarding our CALL TO WORSHIP and our active participation.

As you will see in the opposite column in the bulletin, during the first week of Lent, we will be offering a three week series by Father Robert Barron on the Eucharist entitled: Sacred Meal, Sacrifice and Real Presence. We urge all to plan to attend. Eucharistic Ministers have viewed part 3
only.

As part of our Lenten Focus…

  • We remind all to attend the Parish Mission, March 15th, 16th and 17th here at Wayside.

  • We encourage all, as ever, to attend the weekend Liturgy regularly.

  • Daily Mass is a very rewarding form of devotion for any who can make that a part of their regular prayer.

  • Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is available each Thursday afternoon from 2 to 3 p.m.

  • Prayer and Adoration once monthly on a Wednesday evening in the Church. Watch the Bulletin for exact dates.

  • The church is open every day from about 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for our private prayer.

  • A display of reading materials will be available in Gathering Place vestibule.

  • The Catholic Cable Channel EWTN and the Catholic Radio station offers Mass, talks and other devotions throughout the day.

  • Tri-Parish Penance Service here on Monday, evening March 22. More information to follow.

Have a wonderful Lent in
preparation for a glorious Easter!

HOMECOMING
Catholics Renewing Their Faith

Are you looking for ways to learn more about your Catholic faith?

During the Season of Lent 19 parishes around the Archdiocese will be hosting a series of presentations. These 19 parishes will hold a Series of Adult Formation evening meetings during Lent. Each session will focus on a common question about our faith:

  • What do I mean when I say I believe? What is the connection between Jesus and the Church?
  • How do the Sacraments put us in contact with God? Why does the Church put such emphasis on Sunday Mass?
  • How does faith make a difference in dealing with the "tough stuff" of life - suffering, death, evil, and sin?
  • What is prayer? Why do Catholics pray to Mary and the saints?
  • Why are marriage and sexual morality so important to a Catholic faith perspective?
  • What does it mean to live in this world (citizen, worker, parent) as a believer?

Call the parish in our Deanery below for more information about the Formation Series. It will be helpful to let the parish know if you will attend so that they may prepare their space and materials.

To find out all the parish locations, dates and time call 312-534-5100 or go to the website at www.CatholicsComeHomeCHICAGO.org.

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

they left everything and followed him

The Gospel for today tells the story of how knowing Jesus and listening to his word has the power to change a life (Luke 5:1-11). In the Gospel we hear about the exhausted disciples, who after a full night of hard work caught nothing. We imagine their disbelief when Jesus tells them to go out fishing again and their astonishment with a huge catch of fish. In this moment, Simon Peter saw his life of sinfulness and the experience changed him forever.

Jesus' words had power to transform people in his lifetime and still the Word of God continues to transform lives for those who read, pray and study the Scriptures. Have you ever wondered about the origins of the Bible? Maybe you heard the line in one of the Catholics Come Home TV ads: "Guided by the Holy Spirit, we compiled the Bible."

The Bible as we know it today really began with the life and teachings of Jesus. The earliest followers of Jesus passed along stories by word-of-mouth and then later, they were written down by these people of faith. Pope Damasus (366-384 C.E.) listed the books of today's canon, which was repeated by Pope Innocent 1 in 405 C.E. Then, in 393 C.E. the Council of Hippo created the list of the Old and New Testament books, which is the same as the Roman Catholic Church lists today. Through the Council of Florence in 1441 we receive the definitive list of canonical books.

From the life of Jesus, to repeated stories to the written books of the Bible, the Word of God reaches us today. With Lent coming soon, find the time to read the Gospel of Luke and get to know Jesus better. His words still hold the power to change a life.
