STEWARDSHIP
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS
COMMITMENT

By Deacon Brendan Foley

This Sunday at the 9:45 Mass we are being asked as a community to commit ourselves to support our R.C.I.A. candidates with our prayers as they journey to Holy Name Cathedral to celebrate the Rite of Election. They in turn are making a commitment to a life changing pilgrimage, a never ending search for the holy. The journey doesn't end with the Reception of the Sacraments of Initiation during the Easter Vigil. Rather it is a turning point in the path to holiness. It is a process of growing closer to God in everyday living of their lives through Prayer, Sacrifice and Mercy.

We as a community of Catholic believers in the message of Jesus Christ are being asked as individuals to commit to a Stewardship way of life through Prayer, Sacrifice and Mercy. Not just for Lent but for life. We are being asked to grow in the knowledge and love of God and his son Jesus Christ. It is a simple fact. If we don't grow closer to God we will drift farther and farther away from God. Stop and think about it. When we die would we rather come face to face with God as a friend or a stranger?

This Wednesday, February 17th is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. It is a time of reflection, introspection and preparation. You could describe it as a spiritual spring training for the rest of the year and the rest of our lives. Most of us are in the habit of some kind of commitment for Lent but to consciously make a commitment for life is another thing. It takes time, prayer and conviction that this is a good thing.

We as a community and as individuals are being asked to do just that. We are each being asked to evaluate our own spiritual commitment to a stewardship way of life, through prayer, sacrifice and mercy. We are also being asked to make a commitment to grow in this stewardship way of life one day at a time.

The timing is perfect. In today's gospel we hear the Beatitudes proclaimed; a new way of life. What a wonderful way to start looking at our own way of life. We can ask ourselves what do they mean to me today? How do I measure up? Am I willing to search for a better understanding of them? The possibilities are endless. But the most important question is: What one thing am I willing to do today and everyday to respond to this teaching? It takes prayer and meditation to answer that question. Reflecting on the Beatitudes and your own personal prayer life is a wonderful way to begin Lent.

LENTEN STEWARDSHIP
TREE OF COMMITMENT

Once you have decided on a commitment we ask you first to write it down on a piece of paper and keep it by your nightstand. Every morning when you rise read it and commit to fulfill the commitment today if the opportunity presents itself. In the evening as you go to bed read it again and reflect on how you did with your commitment and pray to begin again tomorrow.

At all the exits from the church there are baskets with cut out paper leaves in various Lenten colors. Once you have chosen your commitment please jot it down and hang the leaf on one of the trees in the back of the church. Every leaf on these trees is a sign and a symbol encouraging someone else to make their own commitments. It can be as simple as a moment of prayer while committing or praying for peace or committing to some act of mercy or whatever will help you become more aware of God's constant and continuing presence in your life. This is how we grow more like Christ. Day by day in little acts of sacrifice, prayer and mercy. This is how we die to self to live in Christ Jesus. This is how we teach our children not by what we say but what we do. This is how we prepare for the second coming of Christ and for our own death and resurrection; by Prayer, Sacrifice and Mercy. It is in the quiet of our hearts that God speaks to us when we take the time to be alone with him.

"If today you hear Gods words harden not your hearts."

WALKING WITH CATHOLICS
Who Have "Come Home"

In December and January there were 5½ weeks of television ads that invited Catholics to come back to the practice of the faith. That invitation has touched the hearts of hundreds of Catholics in the Archdiocese! As Catholics return to the Church, more that 300 of them participated in special opportunities to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation over the last two weeks. The next phase of Catholics Come Home Chicago includes a series of adult formation sessions held during the Season of Lent. Parishes around the Archdiocese will continue to invite Catholics to come back and learn about the teachings and traditions of the Church. If you know someone who wants to learn about the Catholic Church, you can be that warm, inviting voice that says, "If you've been away from the Church for whatever reason, we invite you to take another look and come home." To find the parish locations, dates and times call 312-534-5100 or go to the website at www.CatholicsCome HomeCHICAGO.org.

There is no charge for this program.

OLW 2010 LENTEN PROGRAM

This year we are inviting the entire parish to concentrate on the gift of the Eucharist as the focus of our Lenten devotion, prayer and experience.

During the past several years the United States bishops have become increasingly concerned with what seems to be a lack of understanding of the Eucharist among Catholics as what sets us apart from other Christians. We are hoping that all will enter into a process of taking a renewed look at the very basic reality of CHRIST'S PRESENCE IN THE EUCHARIST and thus His Real and Actual Presence in our lives.

As you will see in the bulletin, during Lent, we will be offering a 3 week series by Father Robert Barron on the Eucharist entitled: Sacred Meal, Sacrifice and Real Presence. We urge all to plan to attend. EMs have viewed part 3 only.

Also, as a part of our Lenten Focus...

  • WE REMIND ALL TO ATTEND THE PARISH MISSION, MARCH 15TH, 16TH and 17TH HERE AT WAYSIDE, with Fr. Bob Lombardo.
  • We encourage all, as ever, to attend the weekend Liturgy regularly.
  • Daily Mass is a very rewarding form of devotion for any who can make that a part of their regular prayer.
  • Lenten Booklets will be available in the Church.
  • Daily Communion Service 7:00 AM  On Saturday - 8:30 a.m.
  • Bible Study - Looking at the Sunday Readings- Friday a.m. in the Gathering Place.
  • Rosary Prayer Meeting - Every Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center.
  • Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament each Thursday afternoon from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Church.
  • Prayer and Adoration once monthly on the 4th Wednesday evening in the Church. Watch the Bulletin for exact dates.
  • The church is open every day from about 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for our private prayer.
  • A display of reading materials will be available in the Gathering Place vestibule.
  • The Catholic Channel, EWTN and the Catholic Station, Relevant Radio 950, offer Mass, talks and other devotions throughout the day.
  • The Stations of the Cross will be held every Friday during Lent at 7:30 p.m. in the Church.
  • Lenten Pasta Dinner followed by the Stations of the Cross - March 19.
  • "Parish Commitment to Spiritual Stewardship" Lenten Program - put your "Leaf" on the Stewardship Tree.
  • Tri-Parish Penance Service here on Monday evening March 22.
A Parish Jewish/Christian Seder Meal will be celebrated March 25 in the Gathering Place. All invited, reservations necessary.

Please post the following, refer to the Bulletin for further information or

BLESSED ARE THEY
WHO HOPE IN THE LORD

On these dark and cold days at the end of winter it is comforting to hear words of hope that come to us in the Sunday readings, especially the Beatitudes spoken by Jesus (Luke 6:17, 20-26). The Beatitudes call us to a life of hope, knowing that what brings us sadness on earth will be turned to joy in heaven.

You may be feeling that hope already in your parish after 5 weeks of Catholics Come Home television ads. In the last three weeks since the ads were on TV the stories have come in through phone calls and e-mails about individuals and families who are returning to the practice of the faith because they felt a warm invitation extended from their parish. There were two special opportunities for Reconciliation in the Archdiocese and over 400 people participated, some who have been away from the church for more than 10 years.

The television ads not only brought people back to church, they helped practicing Catholics think about what it is that we believe. One statement in the ad call
Epic initiated may conversations about our history, "We developed the scientific method and the laws of evidence."

There are moments in Church history that people point to when Church leaders dismissed scientific facts and those sad moments in history are always dredged up in this discussion. Looking at those facts in the context of 2,000 years of not only participating in science, but leading the way that the sciences were  organized and advanced in the world gives a different perspective. To hear a great presentation on Church and science go to Fr. Bob Barron's website
www.wordonfire.org and listen to his sermon from Epiphany 1-30-10, it is sermon #469.

For those Catholics who were intrigued by the TV ads to learn about their faith, there will be an adult formation series in Lent called HOMECOMING: Catholics Renewing Their Faith. This 5-week series will take place in 19 parishes around the Archdiocese of Chicago. For a detailed list of locations
and dates go to
www.CatholicsComeHomeCHICAGO.org.
