REFLECTION
For 7:00 Communion Service
Monday, February 15th, 2010

If you read Deacon Foley's article from Sunday's bulletin, you know that our R.C.I.A. candidates and catechumens celebrated the Rite of Sending at the 9:45 Mass. We then traveled to Holy Name Cathedral for the Rite of Election. The cathedral was filled to capacity with almost 1400 including R.C.I.A. teams, sponsors, and clergy from all over Lake and Cook County. This is only the first of five ceremonies to be held over the next two weeks. It is an exciting time for everyone and humbling to see folks from all walks of life share in one unifying experience for all to be received into the Roman Catholic Church. Bishop Rassas was the celebrant. The ceremony consists of music, readings, a psalm response and music as each parish representative reads the names and each individual approaches the altar to be received by the bishop. In his reflection, Bishop Rassas compared the light of the beautiful stained-glass windows at the cathedral to the light of faith that brought each catechumen and candidate to where they are today. He asked them to ponder two questions: "How did you first hear the invitation?" and "Who is walking with you now?" He also explained that "they are the hope of the church". These were certainly powerful words for all of us to hear and think about.

In the musical reflection, the refrain repeated this message: "Show me how to walk in your world and restore myself in your world". It was through the beauty of the melody, singing, and instrumentalists that we were all given spiritual inspiration.

In our opening prayer on Monday, we asked God the father to
"help us seek the values that will bring us lasting joy in this changing world." As we continue to pray for the Elect from not only Our Lady of the Wayside, but for everyone in the Archdiocese as they move towards the Easter Vigil, we continue to also pray for each other in our journey. For it is through prayer that we place our life in God's hands and base our prayers on faith, love, and trust.

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

So what's your temptation? Chocolate ice cream? Gossip? Alcohol? Petty thievery? Pornography? Or just plain ignoring God?

Gratefully, none of us has to stand up in front of the whole assembly and confess the specifics of our sins (just to be clear, chocolate ice cream isn't one!). We simply admit to our sinfulness before we enter into the celebration of the Eucharist, leaving the specific confession of sin to the privacy of the sacrament of penance when we speak individually with a priest.

Sunday's Gospel directs our attention that Jesus truly was a human person just like all of us. He was subjected to temptation, just like we are. In our desire to conform our lives to be more like Christ, we seek to avoid temptation, just like he did.

For those of us who are already baptized, this Lenten season is one of renewal. We are praying more, fasting, and helping others so as to recover our baptismal innocence. These forty days are meant to get us ready for the renewal of our baptismal promises at Easter. In those promises we rejected Satan, his works, and his empty promises. We rejected sin so as to live in the freedom of God. These forty days will test our fortitude, but we don't go into them alone. We are surrounded by an entire community of faith, all of us working together to become even better Christians. Sometime during this season, we'll each confess our sins with a priest. But as we begin Lent, it might not hurt to tell one other person what you're striving for during this season. Ask them to pray for you, and to help you by being ready to ask how your Lent is going on a weekly basis from now until Easter.
