SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT

It is good that we are here…continue welcoming Catholics home.

Today's Gospel story (Lk. 9:28-36) would make a dramatic movie scene! Jesus' friends are dozing off up on a mountain until they see Jesus completely transformed. At this, Peter, James and John become "fully awake" and they proclaim, "Master, it is good that we are here."

Over the last two months there have been many people who have experienced a kind of transformation of their own…these are the people who have returned to the Catholic Church during the Catholics Come Home evangelization initiative. Many returning Catholics began by going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time in years during January and February. Now that we are in the Season of Lent there are returning Catholics attending programs in their own parishes and coming to the HOMECOMING series around the Archdiocese.

Every active parishioner needs to be aware that there are still Catholics returning, but some are coming in a quiet way by slipping into a pew to attend Mass. This is a great opportunity for all of us to recall what it feels like to be in new surroundings for the first time. If you see a new face in church, smile, introduce yourself and welcome them. You could even say the line from today's Gospel, "it is good that we are here." You can also invite them to the Catholics Come Home table in the Gathering Place Foyer. Members from the Pastoral Council will be there to welcome them.

During the month of March, give a
thoughtful gift to people who need a hand.

www.catholiccharities.net/neighbor

To help increasing numbers of families and individuals in crisis, Catholic Charities is asking the public to Have a Heart and Help Your Neighbor by collecting donations and non-perishable food items to bring to their emergency assistance sites. The donations will be given out daily to those in the greatest need who come to the pantries for food.

Ways to Have a Heart:
Make a tax-deductible monetary contribution:

  • Call (312) 655-7012 to make a donation over the phone or to sign up for monthly giving. A gift of just a dollar a day/$30 a month will help necessities for children and families like eggs, oatmeal, fruit, and more.

  • Mail your check or money order payable to Catholic Charities to Attn: Have a Heart, 721 N. LaSalle, 4th Floor, Chicago, Illinois, 60654.

Catholic Charities' staff, volunteers and supporters will kick off the Have a Heart Help Your Neighbor Campaign in a special way on March 5 by gathering on the NBC 5 Plaza on Michigan Avenue from 6 a.m. until noon to collect donations from the public. NBC News morning personalities will join Catholic Charities in raising awareness about the increased needs for food in the greater Chicago community.

Do Plan to make the

OLW PARISH MISSION 2010

With

Father Bob Lombardo, CFR

Father Bob is one of the founding members of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal along with Father Benedict Groeschel.

Father Bob currently is the Director of the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels, the site of the tragic school fire in December of 1958. In 2005, Cardinal George invited Father Lombardo to establish a mission to serve the people of that area which has become one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city of Chicago. He also serves the greater archdiocese by giving Retreats and Parish Missions.

Several men from Our Lady of the Wayside know Father Bob from their days together as students at Notre Dame University and know of his deep spirituality and dedication. Numerous groups from our Youth Ministry, members of OLW sports teams and our local Knights of Columbus have volunteered at the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels and have come away in awe at the ministry of Father Bob and his group.

The Mission here at OLW begins with the

Wednesday, March 17
