Philippians 1:27A

September 2009

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Next weekend, we celebrate Seminary Sunday in the parishes of Archdiocese of Chicago. On this occasion, we honor the ministry of the many priests who serve you so faithfully each day, as well as those who are preparing to serve you with that same charity in the future.

As part of the Church's observation of the 150th anniversary of the death of St. John Marie Vianney, patron saint of parish priests, Pope Benedict XVI has declared 2009/2010 the Year for Priests, hoping to highlight the mission of those who have been called to the ordained priesthood in the 21st century. Centered around the theme, "Faithfulness of Christ, Faithfulness of Priests," the Year for Priests began on June 19, 2009 and will end on June 19, 2010 with a World Meeting of Priests in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican.

Here in the Archdiocese of Chicago, Mundelein Seminary is a place where vocations to the priesthood are discerned and strengthened. Each year, as I ordain the graduates of Mundelein Seminary to the priesthood of Jesus Christ, I do so with confidence that they have been formed for fidelity and service. The best example of the work of the seminary is reflected in the quiet and compassionate ministry of your pastor and parish priests as, each day, they live out their ordination commitment to bring Christ to you in word and sacrament. I thank them for their good example and you for your prayers and financial contributions which provide our future priests with the education and environment they need to "prepare well" to serve God's faithful. I ask you to pray for those whom God is now calling to the ordained priesthood from among our families and friends. Talk to young men you know whom you judge would be good priests; encourage them to explore the possibility of priesthood.

In a special way, during this Year for Priests, I ask you to remember your bishops and parish priests each day in prayer. You and your intentions are in my own prayers. Thank you and may God bless you.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.
Archbishop of Chicago

STANDING ON GOD'S PROMISES

Most people have an aspect of the Mass that they love and find ourselves touched by at least one portion in a profound way. For many of us, it's the Eucharist that draws us.  But we may also find ourselves always looking forward to the Homily, Scripture readings, seeing the Church "dressed up" for holiday celebrations - or the quiet relief of not having to check our Blackberries every few minutes or being on constant call with our cell phones. I've always loved the music at Church. When I was a child, we sang a hymn called, "Standing On the Promises". People sang it enthusiastically and I imagined everyone feeling taller and stronger being empowered by the lyrics.

In theory, who doesn't want to "stand" on God's promises? We hear countless stories of how God saved His people from disaster and encouraged them not to be afraid. But, in the wake of the recent disasters in our own lives and the lives of our friends, it's hard not be completely freaked out. It's really tough to tune out the shrill voices of fear and tune in God's message of provision and comfort.

This doesn't get any harder than when we consider our financial contribution to the Church. Some of the "voices" that we hear can range from, "I can't give any more, I'm already in debt" to "What if I lose my job or my salary is cut….I need my money". How do we reconcile these very real-life thoughts to what we read in the Bible?

There are some very encouraging scriptures regarding giving, better known in Church terms as tithing. One of my favorites is from Luke 6:38:
"Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you."

Many, many years ago, there must have been a situation happening where God felt that he needed to encourage His people to give through the prophet Malachi. We find the following promise written in Malachi 3:10:  Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house, and try me in this, says the Lord of hosts: Shall I not open for you the floodgates of heaven, to pour down blessings upon you without measure?

Wow! That's an incredible promise and one, I'm sure, that everyone would love to receive.  But this is not one that we can easily "stand on" and do without God's amazing grace.  But neither can we forgive those who have harmed us, love our enemies or really do anything that Jesus has commanded us without God's help. I pray that all of us will receive the grace that will enable us to not be afraid, but "stand" and receive the promises that our generous God is eager to give.
