"And then they will SEE 'the Son of Man coming in the CLOUDS' with great POWER and glory, and then he will send out the ANGELS and gather his ELECT from the four winds, from the end of the EARTH to the end of the SKY".

November 2009

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

For over thirty-nine years, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has been a living example of our Church's social teaching. This year, CCHD is funding twenty-one organizations throughout Cook and Lake Counties that are helping seniors, youth and families to help themselves.

The CCHD is committed to addressing the root causes of poverty, abiding strictly to the Catholic Church's social teaching, including the respect for life and the dignity of all human beings.

Please make a special effort during this Thanksgiving season to give generously to the CCHD's Collection November 21-22. Your contribution enables the CCHD to help build God's kingdom of life, peace and justice today.

One hundred percent of the CCHD budget comes from individual donations - of any size - just like yours. Your contribution does make a powerful difference. May God bless you for your support of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.

You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.
Archbishop of Chicago

There will be a second collection for this just cause on the  weekend of November 21-22.

CYO BASKETBALL: DEADLINE THIS WEEK!
CYO is open to all high school age teens. So far, seems like we are on the road to have a freshman, sophomore, and potentially two junior teams. More detailed information plus forms are online at www.olwparish.org, under the Youth Ministry section. Deadline for registration is this Monday. Nov. 16th. All forms must be turned in to the Youth Ministry mailbox (or coaches) in order to be on the team roster. Season begins the weekend of Dec. 5th-6th. For now, juniors practice on Monday and fresh/soph teams on Wednesday. All practices are 9-10:30 pm in the Middle School Gym.

ALL TEEN OUTREACH: THE FEAST!
All high school age teens are welcome to this month's Outreach entitled "The Feast". In addition to games, icebreakers, and small groups, we will focus on coming to understand the Eucharist from a teen's perspective. And to top it all off, there will be White Castle Sliders for everyone. The Outreach runs from 7-9 pm in the Youth Room located in the Parish Center. All teens are invited.

PEER MINISTRY
Let us keep in mind the many people around the world, our own country, our community, as well as in our personal lives who are in need. Whether it be the impoverished of Mumbai, or the homeless in Chicago, or the sick, sad, or lonely in Arlington Heights, may we be the loving hands reaching out in care and compassion.

Take this weekend off and enjoy yourselves. Our next gathering is the PM Social next Sunday, Nov. 22nd at 7 pm, followed by the Outreach on Sunday, Nov. 29th.

KAIROS
Chances are this Kairos (K9), which takes place over President's Weekend, Feb. 12th-15th, will be a hot commodity. We already have registrations, so please sign-up as soon as you can. Kairos is a retreat (yet so much more) open to high school age juniors and seniors. Simply put, it's a time to get away from the craziness of life and focus on your relationship with yourself, God, and others. For some it is life changing, for all it is certainly life impacting. Registration brochure and permission form is online. Talk to an alumni to get a teen perspective.

LOOKING AHEAD
In response to an ever growing need, the teens of Youth Ministry are sponsoring a hat, gloves, and scarf clothing drive the weekend of Dec. 12th/13th. This winter more people will have fewer resources, not only in terms of warm clothing but money for heat. Once collected, these items will be delivered to Our Lady of the Angels to support the underserved of Humboldt Park, many of which include members of our sister parish St. Mark.

Our Lady of the Angels direct a mobile food pantry the first Sunday of every month. This is directed by Fr. Bob Lombardo, a Franciscan friar and Notre Dame graduate who will also be our Mission Director this Spring. Collection will take place before/after all the weekend Masses. Thank you, in advance, for your generosity.

LEAGUE OF WOMAN VOTERS MEETING

On April 1, 2010, everyone--citizens and non-citizens--living in the U.S.A. must be counted, according to the U.S. Constitution. The League of Women Voters has joined the education and communication campaign for the 2010 U.S. Census. With your help we will make sure everyone is counted.

LWV of the Arlington Heights--Mount Prospect--Buffalo Grove (including Wheeling, Prospect Heights and Elk Grove Village) Area has invited Lee Habich, Partnership Specialist from the U.S. Census Bureau, to speak at our League's free, public meeting on Thursday, November 19, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. at the Arlington Heights Historical Society, 110 W. Fremont (west of the AH Memorial Library). Mr. Habich will talk about the Census, privacy issues, and how the census count impacts such things as our taxes, our political representations--in Springfield and in Washington, D.C. --federal funding for public services, city and school planning, education, and commercial endeavors.

League's goals are:

  • To inform all of us so we are comfortable talking about the 2010 Census - its importance and value - with our family, neighbors, friends, clients, and work associates;
  • For us to network and brainstorm ways to assist residents who may be unable or hesitant to return their completed census questionnaire.
  • To improve the count of residents in hard-to-count communities - immigrants, minorities, rural folk, the homeless, residents of high rises, and non native English speakers and readers.
  • To provide networking opportunities for those who work with hard-to-count populations; and
  • For all of us to return our completed census questionnaires.

The League invites you, members of your staff, and members of your service population to join League and Mr. Habich. We hope to motivate you to join the U.S. Census Bureau's education, communication campaign "It's in Your Hands". If you have joined a Complete Count Committee, have already planned your own campaign to excite your clients about the 2010 Census, or are establishing help centers for residents, please come and share your ideas and plans with us. Please call Judith and Carl Royal at 847-259-5838 if you have questions or suggestions.

We hope to see you on the evening of Thursday, November 19, 2009. Come to learn how to promote a high response to the 2010 U.S. Census. And avoid reducing our 19 U.S. Representatives to 17.
