CATHOLICS COME HOME:
Chicago Style Evangelization

Many parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago have tried to find effective ways to reach out to "inactive" Catholics. This year there is an evangelization effort that will support those efforts through a media campaign called Catholics Come Home. The Archdiocese of Chicago and the Dioceses of Joliet and Rockford have joined together in this evangelization effort and have funded the commercials, which will be shown on all major networks within this large viewing area including ABC, NBC, CBS, WGN, FOX, cable stations, Univision, Telemundo, Polsat and Polvision.

The Centerpiece of this evangelization effort is a commercial titled Epic that has been translated into three languages: English, Spanish and Polish. This commercial has won multiple awards including a 2008 Telly Award for Top Honors and 2009 Communicator Awards. The commercial campaign will begin on December 16, 2009 and run for 5½ weeks, over that time the average TV viewer will see a Catholics Come Home commercial 13 to 20 times.

The Office for Evangelization has created a webpage devoted to Catholics Come Home. This is the place to see a truly "Chicago" look of the media campaign and to find facts, photos and resources specifically for parishes in the Archdiocese. For more information go to
www.CatholicsComeHomeCHICAGO.org or phone Our Lady of the Wayside at 847-253-5353.

If you don't use the Internet and want additional information, call Kathy at Our Lady of the Wayside at 847-253-5353. She is available Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. At other times call and she will respond on the next working day.

ADVENT 2009
By Donna Cunningham, PA, Director of Liturgy

Even though it is only the 21/22 of November and we haven't yet celebrated Thanksgiving we all know that the commercial world has been well into Christmas for weeks. This may not be all bad but it does defuse the deep and traditional meaning and celebration of the season of Advent.

As Catholics we attempt to prepare, in our own lives and those of our family. In the Scripture Readings of the season we look to both the past and the future, when Christ's 1st coming is remembered and when we are reminded of His 2nd Coming at the end of time.

Our "here and now" preparations for the holidays holds our attention much more than stories of the PAST or the FUTURE. And, this concentration diminishes our appreciation of ADVENT and what it can mean for us in the present. Let us consider the Readings of the 4th week of Advent. In each cycle they tell the story of an Annunciation.

  • In the Gospel for Year A Matthew tells us of God's annunciation to Joseph in a dream. He tells him that his betrothed is with child through the action of God.

  • In Year B Luke speaks of God's annunciation to Mary. The angel comes to tell Mary that she has been chosen to be the mother of the "Son of the Most High."

  • In Year C (this Liturgical Season) we will hear Luke speak of the Holy Spirit's annunciation to Elizabeth. Mary, Joseph and Elizabeth each experience an annunciation from God. With this in mind, these Advent Readings can remind us that God's annunciations still continue. God has not stopped speaking. God speaks to us through the Scriptures, through the Church and the Sacraments, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, through the "angels" who come into our lives and through the hopes and dreams we have for a better world. ADVENT thus reminds us to be attentive to the voice of God in our day, even when the noise of the December activity competes for our attention.
There are many ways by which we can give special attention to the time of Advent as we prepare to celebrate Christ's 1st Coming and remind ourselves of His 2nd Coming.

  • You may have noticed that each week in the Bulletin there appears a short reading for each day of the week. Do take advantage of this as a part of your daily individual or family prayer.

  • We here at Wayside incorporate the ADVENT WREATH into our Sunday and weekday liturgies. The circular wreath with its four candles reminds us of God's eternal nature and the light which Christ brings into our lives.

  • At home you can make use of an Advent Wreath as a centerpiece for the season and as a visual countdown to Christmas. You can say a prayer and light the candles before dinner each night whether you are by yourself or in the midst of family chaos. Our prayer should be one of recognizing that Christ is with us, that God speaks to us often and in many ways and that hopefully each time we celebrate His 1st Coming we prepare ourselves a little more for His 2nd coming at the end of time.

  • In previous years the parish provided a FAMILY ADVENT BOOKLET. Because of budget restraints this year, we ask that you use the Bulletin pieces, tune in to Catholic Religious programming or check on line for information on the Spirituality of Advent.

  • Most importantly do attend Mass regularly, try to attend daily Mass or the Communion Service as often as possible.  Note that Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is held each Thursday afternoon from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Church and the Stewardship Committee is offering a Holy Hour and Benediction on the 4th Wednesday evening of every month for the intention of the National Economy.

  • Our Advent Service of Reconciliation will be held one evening each at all three of the Arlington Parishes during the week of December 14-16. Be sure to check upcoming bulletins for exact times and locations for each parish.
Do have a prayerful and exciting advent, one free of too much stress and anxiety in order that you can hear God speaking in all his wonderful ways.

ALL TEEN OUTREACH: THE FEAST!
All high school age teens are welcome to this month's Outreach entitled "The Feast". In addition to games, icebreakers, and small groups, we will focus on coming to understand the Eucharist from a teen's perspective. And to top it all off, there will be White Castle Sliders for everyone. The Outreach runs from 7-9 pm next Sunday, Nov. 29th in the Youth Room located in the Parish Center. All teens are invited.

CYO BASKETBALL
So the teams are set and we are just about ready to go. All we need now are the schedules. Have no fear, they are on the way. Hopefully we will have all game dates by week's end.

PEER MINISTRY
Last month's PM Social (our first ever) was such a big hit so let's do it again tonight (Sun.). Still working out the details, but we know it will be amazing. We will gather in the Youth Room at 7 pm and go from there.

Also, FYI: next Sunday (Nov. 29th), we have our monthly Outreach, The Feast! Please invite any other high school teens you want. Open to all..

KAIROS
Chances are this Kairos (K9), which takes place over President's Weekend, Feb. 12th-15th, will be a hot commodity. We already have registrations, so please sign-up as soon as you can. Kairos is a retreat (yet so much more) open to high school age juniors and seniors. For some it is life changing, for all it is certainly life impacting. Registration brochure and permission form is online. Talk to an alumni to get a teen perspective.

SERVICE: MOBILE FOOD PANTRY
Time to reach out a little. The plan is that on Saturday morning, Dec. 5th Youth Ministry is organizing an outing to help with the Our Lady of the Angels Mission's Mobile Food pantry. This truly is not only a beautiful service, but one that leaves a lasting impression for those who step up to the challenge. And it's pretty simple: assist the residents of the neighborhood collect food and (possibly) clothing from tables set-up in the parking lot. Simple yet profound. Once again, we are still working on the details. If interested, contact Kevin in the YM Office. Adults will be need to drive. We'd love to include both high school and jr. high age teens. (More info on the Mission appears below.)

LOOKING AHEAD
In response to an every growing need, the teens of Youth Ministry are sponsoring a hat, gloves, and scarf clothing drive the weekend of Dec. 12th/13th. This winter more people will have fewer resources, not only in terms of warm clothing but money for heat. Once collected, these items will be delivered to Our Lady of the of the Angels to support the underserved of Humboldt Park, many of which include members of our sister parish St. Mark.
