A BRIEF HISTORY OF CFM

Almost simultaneously, two religious lay groups began forming in the early 1940’s, one in South Bend, IN and the other in Chicago. At a Cana convention in 1948, members from each of the two groups met and the nucleus of Christian Family Movement was formed.

Soon CFM started its own publication, the ACT newsletter, received official church recognition, and initiated contact with similar movements in other cities. In 1949, the first national seminar was held and CFM became a nationwide movement. Today, CFM is a worldwide organization with participation in 50 countries. There are approximately 1,000 CFM families in the United States. Membership in the Chicago area is approximately 250 couples. Our Lady of the Wayside has, for years, had one of the largest CFM memberships not only in the Chicago area, but in the U.S. with approximately 100 families.

The National CFM Board members meet twice per year in different locations. The Board, along with the Executive Director, are responsible for the annual CFM program book and the continuation of the movement in the USA

Christian Family Movement celebrated its 60^th anniversary in 2009. We are invited to grow in our Christian walk together through the Observe, Judge, Act model that has been the cornerstone of CFM since 1949.
