Children's Catechumenate: RCIA for Children (RCIC)
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Children, RCIC, is a program for children in grades 4-8 who have had little or no religious education background, or who have not received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Reconciliation. Through this program the children will learn the doctrines, beliefs and practices that flow from the Church's experience of Jesus, and will be given a thorough course on the sacraments they will be receiving. A series of classes are held on Sunday mornings from 9:45 - 10:45 with specific themes to nurture and welcome these children and impart to them the basics of our Catholic tradition. At the end of the preparation period, the children receive the sacraments for the first time at the Easter Vigil. Also see the RCIA page.
Tuesday Afternoon Classes
Tuesday Evening Classes
Our Tuesday programs continue to offer our families a child-centered, traditional religious education for their children. Grades 1-4 meet every Tuesday afternoon from 4:00 - 5:15 p.m. in Our Lady of the Wayside Elementary School. Grades 5-6 and First/Second Year Confirmation Prep classes (grades 7-8) alternate Tuesday evenings from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. in the Middle School. Classes begin in September and continue through April.
Classes weave together Catholic doctrine, Scripture, Christian living and prayer in an integrated approach. In addition to the textbook, volunteer catechists use a variety of age appropriate methods (such as discussion, role playing, audio visuals, group projects) to enhance their teaching of religious truths. Service opportunities are given to the children to encourage their care of others. Various forms of prayer experiences are incorporated into the curriculum to help children develop their relationship with God.
Parent involvement consists of assistance with homework, volunteerism and helping with special events. Classes are held in the classrooms of the elementary and middle school buildings. Children come together with a peer community in which to learn and grow in their faith.
Home Study (Individual or Groups)
Families who have special circumstances can contact the Director of Religious Education to make arrangements for home study.
REGISTRATION
All families registering for the parish religious education program must obtain a parishioner number. This is done by registering in the parish office, located in the Rectory. A registration cannot be finalized until parishioner registration is complete. Parents are asked to be contributing members of the parish through the use of weekly Church envelopes.
In an extreme situation, we would accept a student outside the parish. The parents(s) would notify the parish office of this fact. A recommendation would be made by the Director of Religious Education in conjunction with the pastor. An additional charge of $200.00 per family is assessed to non-parish families.
Registrations are taken in the Religious Education Office. Families new to our program must register in person and bring a copy of the child's Baptismal Certificate at the time of registration.
